How to transfer a printed image to canvas
Printing directly to canvas is the easiest solution but not all print shops offer it and also it can be more pricey in comparison with printing on paper. In this article I will show how to transfer any image printed on a regular paper to canvas for your painting to look more professional.
Required materials:
- Your printed template on regular paper (Ensure it's mirrored)
- Canvas matching the paper size
- Transfer glue (example)
- Brush
- Sponge
Step 1: Printing the image
Print your template on a regular printer. Make sure you set settings of printing correctly to make it mirrored otherwise when you transfer it to the canvas all numbers will be mirrored which can make the process of painting a bit more complicated.
Step 2: Transferring the image
- Apply an even layer of transfer glue onto the canvas using the brush.
- Carefully place the printed paper (image side down) onto the glued canvas. Smooth out any air bubbles for a seamless transfer.
- Follow the recommended waiting time stated in the transfer glue instructions (typically around 24 hours).
Step 3: Finalizing the transfer
- Lightly moisten the canvas surface with water after the waiting period. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
- Use a damp sponge to remove the top paper layer from the canvas.
- Optionally, rinse the canvas under running water to ensure all paper remnants are removed.
- Let the canvas air dry completely.
After the canvas fully dried you can start painting. We recommend using acrylic paintings for painting on canvas.
